Caltrain No. 38 passes the old Lenzen Street roundhouse in San Jose. At the time this photo was taken, all of Caltrain's F40's had been rebuilt and painted in the new scheme. This is 903, the "Santa Clara".

Two Virginia Railway Express ex-Budd RDC's sit next to one of Caltrain's new gallery cars in San Jose. Caltrain is leasing 14 such VRE cars, including 2 cab-cars, for service to the San Francisco Giants' new Pacific Bell Park.

The interior of the VRE "Boise Budds" (so-nicknamed because they were converted from RDC's to trailer cars in Boise, ID) is reminiscent of a schoolbus. Each car seats approximately 100 people, and the ride is considerably smoother than that of a Caltrain gallery car.

Another northbound commute accelerates through the only cantilever bridge on the Peninsula. Adjacent to this bridge is "El Palo Alto" (The Tall Tree), a very tall Sequoia tree after which the city of Palo Alto is named.

With baseball season in full swing in 2000, trains 65 and 70 usually ran with 6 VRE cars and one gallery cab-car when there was a night-game, freeing up cars for "Baseball Specials". Above, on just such a day, 70 hustles along the viaduct between tunnels 1 and 2 in San Francisco.
