The San Jose depot looks sharp nowadays since it was refurbished a few years ago.

While the Union Pacific I-OACI passed through this area (south of Cuesta Pass), I heard a large snapping sound as each wheel would pass over a certain point...
March 19, 1998
Here is the worst part of the rail. When the wheels hit these "splinters", they would snap and vibrate back and forth, accounting for all of the noise.

Someone working for Caltrain has a sense of humor. This container used for storing welding equipment is painted just like one of Caltrain's.
March 28, 1998
This old shack next to the tower in Santa Clara was at one time used to house speeders, accounting for the tracks leading out of the building.

Cuesta Pass is full of interesting history, especially since it has changed very little over the last 50 years. Here you can see an abandoned tunnel near milepost 143.
April 25, 1998
A Southern Pacific Daylight E-unit and a Western Pacific F-unit stand on display inside the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento.
July 1998
Here's a head-on shot of the E-unit. Notice the AAR control stand on the engineer's side of the cab.
July 1998
This is a sad sight, in a way. These ex-ATSF Superchief F's get beaten by the harsh Sacramento sun each day, and their paint shows it.
July 1998
This telephone pole was the victim of a slide in Cuesta Pass. In order to keep the weight from breaking the wires, the pole had to be chopped.
